Dear Marjorie
I hope you are keeping alright, I am writing this note in the guard house I am on guard, this evening for twenty four hours, what a lot of red tape this guard business. One presents arms to a Major and so forth and slopes arms to any C.O. of lower grade, they keep the prisoners in the guard house and believe me the cells are full of prisoners. We are expecting a few more in about midnight, what a life, some of these boys are in the G H for petty things it is a great pity breaking the spirit of these boys, they have lost all interest in the army, Great pity! Well darling I have not heard from you for a long time, I hope you are alright. I heard that Gerry has been busy again in London. I hope Ealing has been lucky and has not been knocked about too much. I am on duty in a few seconds nine o'clock so will continue this letter in the morning.
Heck, am I cold? The wind is terribly cold and my hands and feet are like ice. I am sitting round a nice fire so I should soon warm up. What a night those Scotch lads made of it, I do not think there were many sober. We put some in the guardhouse because they became violent towards the guard. I heard some rifle shots while I was on guard they came from the direction of the barracks so I guess there was some trouble. Those Scotch boys think nothing of firing a rifle at one another, they seem to think it a great joke. Well I have just received your parcel and letter. All the mail comes into the G H to be sorted, so I was on the spot to collect your letter. Your parcel has to go to the Battery Officer because I have to sign for it, so I shall collect it tonight. The gloves which you sent were fine, I was under the impression that I had thanked you and told you that the gloves were O K. Regarding you coming down here, I better wait until I know that I have a day off, you see some times there is duties to be done when the regiment has a half day. For instance today is a half day but I am on duty, so until I am told that I have a day off it is not worth bringing you down until I am certain that I am free from duties.
Cherrio
With love,

Syd
